They strut around campus on their four legs looking like they own the place–and maybe they do. I am talking about our campus cats, of course. You have probably seen Kirby’s most recent portrait hung in the hall for the photography class or seen Rodrigo down at the western barn. Maybe you have spent time pondering the difference between Baby Cat and Dale or sought warm cuddles from Brennan. While there are many cats at Grier, these are some of the most commonly seen felines around campus. In this article you’ll get to know Kirby, Brennan, Baby Cat, and Rodrigo, and learn more about their lives at Grier.

Kirby has been spotted on the colonnade recently; he took over as the king of the cats while Dale was missing. Now, he and Dale seem to share the limelight. While he was a bit more reclusive before Dale’s absence, Kirby now walks all over campus. He has also been spotted in Dale’s spots at the barn. We are still waiting to find out how Dale feels about this new rival. Kirby takes his job very seriously and can be seen actively sitting in a stall waiting for a mouse to come. He will greet everyone with a meow and if you sit down, he will most likely sit on top of you.

Before Kirby or Dale were king, Brennan used to be the star. He even had his own TikTok account. One student nicknamed him “Skinny Ed,” as in skinnier than Kirby and a lookalike to Ed Sheeran. Dale and Brennan, who are biological brothers, were named after the characters, Brennan Huff and Dale Doback from the Step Brothers movie. While Brennan used to spend a lot of his time sitting outside the infirmary, he was recently taken in by a woman in Birmingham. Despite his new life as a pampered house cat, Brennan still visits Grier from time to time.

Baby Cat has become a staple of Grier the past year and tends to move between all of the barns. Most people have said that while he may look a lot like Dale, you can tell it is Baby Cat from his walk. He has a very cute, wiggly walk, which matches his kitten-like personality. He tends to stay more around the horses than people. Baby Cat can be very playful though and likes to push small items around the barn with his paws.

Rodrigo, a tabby cat who usually stays around the western barn, is almost always lounging in the western tack room, sitting comfortably on one of the saddle pads. This cat does not seem to enjoy being picked up, so those who see him may want to admire from afar. He is friends with Baby Cat, and they can often be found hanging around one another. While he can be playful at times, Rodrigo definitely enjoys his beauty sleep in the warm tack room.
