There are no more weeks of school left, meaning that while the time winds down, students’ schedules are filling up. One of the items keeping students busy are clubs like our own: the school newspaper. Started in the 1800s, The Cricket—despite a long hiatus—made an epic comeback this year. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of The Cricket staff and our students and readers, we have crafted a publication with the heart and soul of Grier at its core. With the 2024-2025 school year coming to a close, let’s review what happened this year.
The Cricket in Numbers as of this publication:
- 3,316 stories read
- 93 articles
- 20 staff members
- 8 editors
- 2 editors-in-chief
- 126 years of journalism history
The Year in News
The 2024-2025 school year has been eventful here at Grier. We’ve celebrated holidays, experienced extracurriculars, participated in spirit weeks and all-school events, and finally, experienced world events as a community. From Christmas tree lighting to Galentine’s day, Grier girls have found comfort in our school community on holidays, especially when they couldn’t be with their families. One way Grier fosters community is through events. This year, these included International Read-Aloud Day, MLK Jr. Day, Spirit Week, and the all-school read, all of which encourage girls to be active and supportive within our community. This bond supports our girls as they participate in Model UN, STEM clubs, fashion design, and so much more. We can’t wait to see what the news next year will bring!
The Year in Features
Campus was buzzing with activity this year. Students served their community through programs like recycling club, the writing center, the middle school bake sale, STEM outreach at local schools, and the Penn State Powwow. Events like the Grier Gala and Motion Dance Competition showcased the talent of our dancers, while IEA and WEC shows highlighted our riders. Features chronicled the lives of campus pets and staff members, telling the stories of the people that make Grier our second home.
The Year in Sports
Grier girls showed their athleticism and commitment through several sports this year. Our riding and dance programs continued their domination of sports, while the Varsity soccer team won their first games in nearly a decade! Fall sports included volleyball, soccer, and tennis, who shared a senior night back in the first semester of school. Our winter fencing and archery teams were also successful and braved the winter weather for their sports. The Varsity season wrapped up with our annual Sport Banquet, the closing ceremony for every Varsity sport offered here at Grier.
The Year in Arts & Entertainment
As a school known for its art, the A&E section of our newspaper was heavily supplied with tales and critiques of fashion, movies, awards shows, and other forms of media. Movies like Wicked received glowing reviews from our staff, while the rollercoaster that was New York fashion week led to mixed opinions. Other highlights in A&E included the relaunch of the Grier Podcast, the spring music performance, and the Grier Fashion Show.
