A Look Into the WEC Ohio Horse Show

The air buzzed with excitement as Grier’s equestrian team loaded up their horses and gear, leaving for one of the most anticipated events of the riding season— The World Equestrian Center (WEC) show in Wilmington, Ohio. On Wednesday, February 5th, sixteen talented riders, along with their dedicated horses and four supportive coaches, left to compete at WEC. For many of the riders who attended, the trip was a chance to bond with their teammates, challenge themselves in the ring, and make long-lasting memories in addition to competing for ribbons.

The show offered riders a variety of classes, and the Grier girls competed in disciplines including the hunter, jumper, and equitation categories. They showed their skills in the jumping ring with heights of .70 to 1.30 meters and measured between 2’3” and 3’6” in hunter classes. In equitation, riders showed between 2’6” and 3’3”. To clear up any confusion for non-riders, jump heights are measured in meters versus the hunter and equitation categories which are measured in feet.

Riders roomed together, much like they do in dorms back at Grier and were able to form close bonds with one another and strengthen their friendships. “I absolutely loved being able to go to WEC Ohio, especially with this group of girls,” said Hunt Seat Captain Logan Faison, ‘27. “Everyone was so kind and supportive to one another and always had a positive attitude. It really felt like a family.”

Riders were able to partake in an amazing showing experience and to compete at a higher level, with future shows on the horizon. Olivia Lowry, ‘26, said, “I am so grateful for the opportunity to show with this amazing team”, she explained, “I’m very proud of everything we accomplished and I’m very thankful for the opportunity to grow closer to my teammates.”

Grier riders took home several wins and represented the team well. Champion riders included Anleigh Ahlert, ‘25 with Miss and Olivia Lowry on Myles. Reserve champions included Logan Faison on Cappy; Hazel Pratts, ‘27, who rode Cloud; and Natalie Townsend, ‘26, on Eidan. Other winners included, Ava Bives, ‘29, who rode Larry; Jimena Font, ‘28, on Lina; Quinn Muspratt, ‘27, who rode Jasmin; and Fernanda Vazquez, ‘27, on Chief.

The competition was an absolute knockout. Following the impressive showing, Coach Kelaine Croce shared her thoughts on the team’s success. “I’m so proud of all of our riders,” she added, “I’m very excited to see their future accomplishments in the show ring. I have greatly enjoyed my first year with these girls and the school and I am excited for what the future brings.”

The success of the riders is a testament to their hard work and dedication, but also the supportive and encouraging environment of the equestrian team and the Grier community. As our riders continue to work hard on the road to Nationals in April, we’ll continue cheering them on.
