If you see girls strolling across Grier’s campus in frivolous, eye-catching outfits resembling anything from frat boy attire to the vibrant colors of M&Ms—there’s no need to be concerned. It’s Spirit Week!

At the start of each marking period, Grier hosts Spirit Week to boost school spirit and morale, as well as bring students and staff together through fun and laughter. This Spirit Week’s themes were as creative as ever.

Monday

Monday was Skittles Day, where students dressed up in the bright colors of a Skittles packet, transforming the school into a walking rainbow. Skittles Day showed how we can bring fun colors and sweet attitudes even during the bleak and dreary winter. Whether wearing subtle pops of color or going full-blown rainbow with their outfits, girls let their creativity shine through. Vice President of Student Council Sara Vélez Patiño had a red headband and sweater, embodying a red skittle. Senior Quinn Stewart took things to the next level wearing a green hat, shirt, and pants, with green eyeshadow not only on her eyelids, but on her nose and cheekbones—truly a fashionable Skittle.

Tuesday

Tuesday followed with the infamous Adam Sandler Day, where girls wore their baggiest shirts and pants in tribute to the beloved actor. This day brought back the era of baggy sweatpants, baseball caps, and mascara mustaches. Girls wore comfy, baggy pants and loose shirts, or many opted for the classic look of jorts with caps. “I just have a lot of fun dressing up—or down, in this case—and laughing with other students about our outfits,” said Isa Alcala, ‘27. For some students, like myself, dressing like Adam Sandler wasn’t much of a stretch, that’s pretty much what my closet is composed of.

Wednesday

On Wednesday, Grier honored National Pink Shirt Day, a movement that began in Canada when a student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In response, seniors Travis Price and David Shephard distributed 50 pink shirts to classmates as a show of solidarity. Today, the movement has spread worldwide, and Grier students took part by wearing pink as a reminder to choose kindness.

Thursday

Thursday saw the school transformed into a romcom lover’ dream, as students dressed as their favorite 2000s romantic comedy characters. From the classic charm of Elle Woods, brought on by English teacher Mrs. Cleary, to the effortless cool of Bridget Jones, exhibited by senior Ayla Asgarova, the halls were filled with cinematic nostalgia. What better way to celebrate the month of Valentine’s Day than by dressing as a classic romantic movie character? Who doesn’t love a good throwback Thursday?

Friday

Finally, Friday wrapped up the week with the classic Green and Gold day, where students and staff from the Green and Gold teams showed their team spirit by wearing their respective team colors. “The friendly competition kind of brings the school together,” said Libby Jones ‘27. “Also, go green!”

Spirit Week never fails to lift the school’s energy up, even in the midst of winter. “I think it brings people together,” said Sofi Jones, ‘27. Junior Cassie Solow added, “I think it’s a fun time to be able to dress up with your friends and follow a costume theme. You can just have fun with it.” And that’s exactly what Spirit Week is all about—bringing the community together, one creative outfit at a time.
