While the snow melts into a slushy mix of ice and dirt, sunny Los Angeles is starting to prepare for the most exciting moment of the year, the Oscars–or, as I like to call it, Christmas day for film nerds like me. It’s official, the 2025 Academy Award nominations are in! Hold onto your popcorn! This year we’ve seen an incredibly diverse mix of acting performances from epic sci-fi, to character dramas, to touching stories.
The Oscars this year are making history in more ways than one. Valentina Gómez has now become the first trans woman to be nominated for Best Actress. Gómez, the lead in “Emilia Pérez,” gave an outstanding performance that has been praised by critics for its complexity and authenticity. Her nomination marks a milestone for representation of the LGBTQIA+ community in Hollywood, highlighting the gradual efforts the Academy is making to embrace more diverse voices and their stories.
“Emilia Pérez,” the musical-drama that has shockingly captured the attention of critics, leads the way with 13 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Directed by Jacques Audiard, “Emilia Pérez” tells the story of a Mexican cartel leader who undergoes gender affirming surgery and begins a new life as a woman. This film’s bold storytelling has captured the attention of audiences worldwide, although responses are varied. Some people have praised the film for its unique exploration of identity in a bizarre setting, while others criticize it for its “poor” portrayal of Mexico’s cartel world. Despite the controversy surrounding the movie, it is set to have an explosive award season.
Another major contender is “Wicked,” the anticipated adaptation of the beloved Brodway musical. With an amazing set, musical performances, and wardrobe, “Wicked” has earned nine nominations, including Best Original Song, Best Costume Design, and Best Picture. Cynthia Erivo’s powerful performance as Elphaba earned her a nomination for Best Actress and Ariana Grande-Butera’s sweet portrayal of Glinda earned her a nod for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
For Erivo, this nomination is more than just an Oscar nomination since she is just one Oscar away from reaching EGOT status (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony winner), one of the most prestigious accomplishments in Hollywood. Cynthia’s win this year could write her name down in the history books as one of the few people to reach this remarkable milestone.
It’s safe to say that this cinematic season has left us with some of the most groundbreaking films, sequels, adaptations and documentaries. There is certainly some fierce competition for that tiny golden man. From groundbreaking visuals to powerful performances, this year’s nominees show us the true magic behind storytelling and cinema. As the Oscars approach, the anticipation is starting to build for this celebration that honors the creativity and passion of filmmakers and artists who continue to captivate viewers with their films. So stay tuned for the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025, hosted by Conan O’Brien. It will be broadcasted live on Hulu for the first time in order to expand access to viewers worldwide.
