Wicked Makes Us All Want to Dance Through Life

A Movie Review
Wicked Makes Us All Want to Dance Through Life

WICKED! WICKED! WICKED! The movie we’ve all been waiting for…well at least I have. The hit movie starring Tony award winner Cynthia Erivo and singer-songwriter Ariana Grande-Butera was released November 22, 2024 and quickly became one of the highest grossing films of the year. The movie also features other stars such as Michelle Yeoh, Peter Dinklage, and Jeff Goldblum.

The movie version of Wicked is a stunning reimagination of the beloved musical that has captivated audiences for years. Directed by Jon M. Chu, this adaptation brings the magical world of Oz to life with stunning visuals, exceptional performances, and a somewhat fresh narrative. It manages to stay true to the original story while offering new lessons and insights. Both Erivo and Grande-Butera provide astonishing performances that give a new sense of life to these iconic and lovable characters.

Erivo’s portrayal of Elphaba is nothing short of astounding. Her voice and emotional depth make Elphaba’s journey from being a misunderstood outcast to the Wicked Witch of the West both compelling and gut-wrenching. Her ability to convey grief, inner turmoil, and strength is a testament to her talent and dedication to the role. Erivo often ends up in tears during interviews, proving that the emotions she portrays as Elphaba are real and raw for the British actress.

Grande-Butera, on the other hand, brings charm, wit, and a sprinkle of sassiness to her version of Galinda. Her performance is humorous and touching, capturing the complexity of a character who is often seen as somewhat bougie. Galinda’s compassion and kindness become increasingly clear throughout the movie as she proves to be a caring and true friend. Galinda and Elphaba’s evolving friendship is the central and most heart-warming element of the film. The chemistry between Erivo and Grande-Butera is abundantly clear and makes the friendship on screen feel both realistic and honest.

The production design and special effects in Wicked are truly spectacular. The world of Oz is brought to life with vibrant colors and intricate sets that enhance the overall story. From the bright green towers of the Emerald City to the dark and mysterious forests, each scene is crafted expertly, reeling the audience into this fantasy world. But enough about the set—let’s talk about the songs that we can’t stop singing in our heads (or aloud).

Every song is exceptional! While reviewers have mixed opinions on Peter Dinklage’s version of “Something Bad” and Jeff Goldblum’s “Sentimental Man,” I thoroughly enjoyed both performances. The classics “Defying Gravity” and “Popular” are both given new energy and emotion, making them feel fresh and incredibly catchy. A moment that really stands out for me is the end of “Defying Gravity” when Cynthia Erivo does that extraordinary final riff. It truly showcases her musical abilities and is the perfect note on which to end this masterpiece of a movie.

Overall, the 2024 adaptation of Wicked is an absolute hit! It offers lifelong fans that true musical experience and provides newcomers a visually stunning and emotionally resonating experience. The production value, storytelling techniques, and in-depth character development make this movie a true success. With standout performances from Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande-Butera, Wicked is a must see that reaffirms this classic broadway tale. Personally, I would give it a 100/10! Grab your friends and rush to the theater for this movie that truly validates the value of friendship. You will definitely walk out of the theater feeling like you, too, can defy gravity!
