KPop Demon Hunter brings Korean Culture to the World

KPop Demon Hunters tells the story of a KPop band who moonlights as demon hunters, protecting their fans by keeping up a magical barrier, called the “Hanmoon,” between the human and demon worlds. The movie has been acclaimed by huge audiences around the globe becoming one of the most popular movies on Netflix.

Currently, its soundtrack has gained four top 10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100. Most notably, the song “Golden” had been 1st on the charts for the six weeks in a row.

Not only does the movie’s soundtrack contribute to its renown, but the hardworking directors, Maggie Kang and Christ Appelhand, have contributed to many of the movie’s great elements. Their creativity beautifully represents traditions originating from Korea, including dance, music, and art.

Since KPOP Demon Hunter has become the most-watched animated movie on Netflix, it has opened up many characteristics of Korea to viewers across the world. Korean landmarks like N Seoul Tower, famous for its observation deck, feature heavily in this movie. Beyond this, many Korean foods such as Korean ramen, kimbap, and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) motivate the main characters’ actions and performances. Overall, these Korean elements demonstrate the Korean influence in this film, and aim to introduce Korean culture to viewers.

As one of Grier’s Korean Students, I appreciate this movie, with its award-winning songs, and elements of Korean culture. I highly encourage Grier Girls to take the time to watch this well-done movie and explore the movie’s music, culture, and art.
