Whether you’re an avid Vogue reader with your monthly subscription and favorite Vogue tote, or just a regular gal who has picked up a magazine from a stand before a long flight, I’m sure you’ve read a magazine at some point in your life. I can guarantee that you just skimmed through it and piled it right next to another one. However, you don’t know what you’re missing out on!
While magazines are often pushed aside as being something to skim through, or for shallow sixteen-year-old girls, there’s actually a lot of valuable information inside those glossy pages. So, have you ever wondered how to read a magazine? Is there a right and wrong way to read a magazine?
In theory, no, but over the years, I’ve found a way to optimize the content in magazines, especially the ones from Vogue. I call this the “ECASR” method, a method that doubles the enjoyment and value you can gain from a magazine.

You always want to start with “E”: the Editor’s Letter. It lets you understand the overall theme and vision for the month. It sets the tone, highlights the most important articles and stories, and gives you an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at why certain stories were included. It’s the ribbon that ties the whole magazine together. Plus, who doesn’t want to read a letter from Anna Wintour addressed directly to you, the reader.
Next, the “C”: move onto the article highlighted on the cover of the issue. Whether it’s an interview with a famous celebrity, or a deep dive into the history of a well-known fashion house, this article is the heart of the issue. It’s what the editor wants you to remember the most; that’s why it was given the place of honor on the cover. So, give it your full attention, and even try to tie it back to whatever was mentioned in the Editor’s Letter.
Before diving into the actual articles, it’s important to look over the fashion ads, the “A.” This is especially true in Vogue. Before you ignore my suggestion, remember that these aren’t just your regular ads. These are perfectly curated works of art that also help set the tone for the issue’s aesthetic. Anna Wintour wouldn’t place a random ad in her magazine if it didn’t add value, not even for Karl Lagerfield. Soak in the gallery in front of you. From Chanel and Dior, to Rolex and Van Cleef, there’s something for everyone.
After you’ve properly established the mood of the magazine, you can finally complete “S”—what you’d normally do with a magazine, of course. Skim! Flip through the magazine, look at the photographs, headlines, and anything that catches your eye. Make a mental note on the pages that catch your attention and let the anticipation build up.

Wait! Before you read what you just marked, let’s tap into another sense besides eyesight: smell. Yes, you read that right! These magazines contain tons of free samples of the most luxurious perfumes. Smell them all, see what you like. Who knows, maybe you’ll find your future signature scent inside the sticky pouch.
Now, you’re finally ready for “R”: read! Choose what you’d like to spend your time reading. Fashion editorials and reviews? Beauty tips? Features in art or culture? Dive into the articles you previously marked, or even try reading something new and unexpected. Read, absorb the content, and get inspired by the most iconic people in the world.
By following the official ECASR method, you’ll change the mindless flip through and skimming sessions to your own curated gallery, all in the palm of your hands. So, the next time you pick up a Vogue, or any other magazine, embrace the full experience, Sara style. You might be surprised by how much you were missing out on.
